The MiG-29K was initiated in 1984 as a Russian Air Force development program for a multi-role fighter, and from 1989 to 1991, the MiG-29K was tested aboard the aircraft carrier cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov.
The MiG-29K differed from the production MiG-29 model in that it featured a new multi-function radar called the Zhuk, a cabin with a monochrome display and the HOTAS (Hands-on Throttle and Stick) principle, the RVV-AE air-to-air missiles with active homing, anti-ship and anti-radar missiles, and precision-guided air-to-ground weapons.
The development of the MiG-29K was preceded by deck-landing trials conducted on several prototypes using the carrier-based navigation equipment and the arrestor hook.
The first flight of the MiG-29E took place on July 23, 1988. On November 1, 1989, the same day as the SU-27K,
The first landing of the MiG-29K on the deck of the aircraft carrier "Tbilisi" (now known as "Admiral Kuznetsov") took place. Then, the first takeoff of the MiG-29K from the carrier's deck was successfully completed.
The fighter is equipped with folding wings and a stabilizer. It has an enlarged wing and arresting hook.
The MiG-29K carrier-based multi-role fighter is designed to cover naval groupings from the air, gain air superiority, and destroy targets on the sea surface and on the ground with guided high-precision weapons day and night in all weather conditions.
The aircraft is optimized for service from medium-displacement carriers.
