The A-4 Skyhawk was developed by Douglas in response to the US Navy's requirement for a jet-powered attack aircraft to replace the aging A-1 Skyraider.
Douglas opted for a design that minimized size, weight, and complexity.
The result was an aircraft that weighed only half the weight specified by the Navy.
The wings were so compact that they did not need to be folded for carrier storage.
A-4M: Special naval version with improved avionics and a more powerful J52-P-408a engine with 50 kN thrust, an enlarged cockpit, and an IFF system.
Later equipped with the Hughes AN/ASB-19 Angle Rate Bombing System (ARBS) with TV and laser spot tracker; 158 units were built.
