- Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 early version
The intensified Allied bomber offensive against Germany and occupied Europe forced the Luftwaffe to deploy the older Bf 109G series in a variety of roles to counter the overwhelming number of Allied aircraft.
Although the Fw 190, a more ideal interceptor due to its heavy armament, lacked the necessary high-altitude performance or the necessary number of aircraft to effectively counter the tide, the Bf 109G-6 was introduced for a variety of roles for which it was unsuitable, further compromising its performance.
Like the Bf 109G-1 and G-2, the Bf 109G-5 and G-6 were produced in parallel and were essentially versions of the same variant. The unpressurized Bf 109G-6 was far more numerous than the G-5, saw more service, and also had a significantly longer endurance. It was introduced in early 1943 and was still in service in 1945.
The most commonly produced versions of the G-6 were the R-3 fighter (300-liter drop tank), the R-6 fighter (MG 151/20 underwing cannons), and the R-2 reconnaissance aircraft (Rb 50/30 camera installation).
