From 1944 onwards, the Luftwaffe found itself in a vicious circle.
More air warfare meant more losses and a fundamental need for more aircraft and pilots.
More losses meant that more pilots were needed.
In an attempt to increase the speed of the Bf 109G, the DB 605D engine was developed.
Similar to the DB 605AS, the DB 605D's supercharger was enlarged, and the compression ratio and displacement were also increased. Thrust was maintained, and as a result, the G-10 was the fastest of the entire G series.
Standard equipment on the G-10 included the FuG 25a IFF, a DF loop, the high wooden tail, the Erla canopy, and the FuG 16ZY with the Moranne mast under the left wing.
The DB 605D used the improved cowling, enlarged supercharger intake, deeper oil cooler, and wider propeller blades, all of which appeared on the G-14AS.
Another visual difference on the G-10 were two bulges on either side of the lower cowling, created by enlarged oil pans and camshaft covers.
Some production G-10 models received wings with full-size wheel well bulges and G-6/14 tires. These aircraft also had a long shaft, a fixed tailwheel, and no external trim tabs on the rudder. The extended tailwheel was another attempt to improve the pilot's view over the cowling and provide a better angle of attack during takeoff.
