The Bf 109G series, also known as "Gustav," was introduced in mid-1942.
Its initial variants (G-1 to G-4) differed from the Bf 109F only in minor details, primarily the more powerful 1,475 hp DB 605 engine.
Odd-numbered variants were built with a pressurized cabin as high-altitude fighters, while even-numbered variants served as non-compressed air-assisted air superiority fighters and fighter-bombers.
There were also variants for long-range photo reconnaissance.
The later G series (G-5 to G-14) was produced in a variety of variants.
In early 1944, tactical requirements led to an increase in engine power to 1,800–2,000 hp using MW-50 water injection and high-performance superchargers.
