In the second half of the war, the Model 52 Zero, a more advanced version of the Model 22, was developed to take on the increasingly numerous high-performance aircraft of the USA.
It had a shorter wingspan of 11 m with rounded wingtips, was powered by the same 1130 hp Nakajima "Sakae" engine as the Model 22 Zero, and featured the new exhaust propulsion system that gave it a top speed of 565 km/h.
The A6M5 was armed with two 7.7mm machine guns and 20mm cannons.
The A6M5 began service in the autumn of 1943, and saw action in both the Solomon Islands and the Marianas.
