Although often compared to the better-known B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24 was based on a more modern design that allowed for a higher top speed, greater range, and a heavier bomb load; however, it was also more difficult to fly, requiring high control forces and exhibiting poor handling characteristics during formation flight. Flight crews and commanders in the European theater generally preferred the B-17 due to its ruggedness. The placement of fuel tanks in the upper fuselage and the lightweight construction—measures intended to extend range and optimize assembly-line production—made the aircraft vulnerable to damage in combat. Among American crews, the B-24 was notorious for its tendency to catch fire. Furthermore, emergency water landings or belly landings posed significant risks due to the high-mounted Davis wing, as the fuselage was prone to breaking apart. Nevertheless, thanks to its high payload and long range, the B-24 performed outstandingly in a wide variety of operational roles.
The B-24's most famous mission was the low-level attack on the Ploiești oil fields in Romania on August 1, 1943; however, this ended in disaster when the waves of the attack fell out of synchronization.
