Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation had never built a combat aircraft before designing the replacement for the TBF-1 Avenger. The XTBF-1, which first flew in August 1940, was a solid machine with a robust airframe, wings with slanted hinges that allowed them to fold alongside the fuselage, an internal bay for torpedoes or other munitions, ample fuel, and a powered dorsal turret.
Eastern Aircraft received a follow-on order and delivered nearly identical models, known as the TBM, in March 1942.
Most of the Avengers produced were Eastern's TBM-3 model, known for its powerful R-2600 engine, reinforced wings for greater overall weight, and reinforcements for carrying radar scanners or missiles. During the war, Eastern developed numerous specialized versions of the TBM equipped with early warning systems for photo reconnaissance, transport, or night reconnaissance.
Other notable models included the 3E, the first dedicated anti-submarine warfare aircraft equipped with modern sensors and operating from a carrier, and the 3W, the first aircraft to operate with an early-warning radar.
