The Grumman TBF Avenger was introduced into the U.S. Navy in 1942 to replace the Douglas TBD Devastator.
It was a large, carrier-based aircraft powered by a single 1,700 hp Wright R2600-8 engine. It served as a torpedo bomber and had a crew of three.
The Avenger featured a powered gun turret located directly behind the cockpit.
It had an excellent war record, from its disastrous debut at Midway to the bombing of Tokyo. The TBF-1C was designed to address these deficiencies of the TBF-1: the .30 caliber machine gun mounted in the engine cowling was removed in favor of two .50 caliber machine guns mounted in the wings.
The other noticeable external change to the TBF-1C was the relocation of the antenna mast slightly further aft, to the rear of the reversing mast. Inside, the seat was removed from the second cockpit and replaced with a radio. Development of the Avenger continued after the war, with the Fleet Air Arm placing 100 TBM-3Es into service in 1953.
