It soon became clear to the US military and the British RAF that the rather large and complicated types such as the O-47 or the Lysander, which had been developed in the pre-war period for army cooperation, close support, artillery observation and liaison tasks, were not suitable for real missions.

The Piper L-4 "Grasshopper" was a modified version of the Piper J-3 for the military.
