The P-51 Mustang was developed in 1940 at the request of Great Britain.
Mustangs saw service in almost all active combat theaters, including the Pacific, where they escorted B-29 bombers from Iwo Jima to Japan.
Between 1941 and 1945, the Army Air Force ordered 14,855 Mustangs (including the A-36A dive bomber and the F-6 photo-reconnaissance version), including 7,956 P-51Ds with a "bubble" canopy and heavier armament.
P-51Ds served as interceptors and primarily in support of ground forces.
P-51s remained in service with Reserve and National Guard units until 1957.
