The North American P-51D Mustang was originally ordered by the British Air Purchasing Commission in April 1940 and made its first flight for the U.S. Army Air Force in September 1942.
The performance of this initially underpowered, aerodynamically clean single-seat fighter was perfected with the installation of the Packard V-1650 Merlin engine, resulting in the P-51B and D versions.
In the European Theater, the primary role of the P-51D, introduced in May 1944 and equipped with drop tanks, was to escort the heavy bomber formations of the U.S. 8th Air Force from their British bases to targets deep in Germany, including Berlin and beyond.
During the Korean War, P-51Ds were used primarily in ground support until they were retired in 1953.
The P-51 remained in service with Air Reserve and National Guard units until 1957.
After the war, the Mustang enjoyed widespread popularity in over 55 countries and was reinstated in production for the U.S. Air Force in the 1960s.
