The F8F Bearcat was Grumman's last carrier-based piston-engined fighter.
Two XF8F-1 prototypes were ordered in November 1943, the first of which made its first flight on August 21, 1944.
Grumman again chose the most powerful engine available at the time, the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp—the same engine that had powered the Hellcat and Tigercat models.
This time, the engine was installed in the smallest and lightest airframe possible.
The result was a highly maneuverable, fast aircraft with a climb rate 30% higher than the Hellcat.
