Like the F6F-3N, the F6F-5N was also designed as a night fighter.
The aircraft were equipped with an AN/APS-6 radar. This ensured that, despite the usually short nighttime encounters, their firepower was sufficient to inflict significant damage.
The night fighter was a dangerous opponent, as many aircraft were armed with two 20 mm cannons and four .50 caliber machine guns.
Grumman built 1,432 examples of the F6F-5N Hellcat.
They were flown by both the Navy and Marines from aircraft carriers and land bases.
Apart from the radar installation and other armament, the F6F-5N was essentially identical to the standard F6F-5.
