The Curtiss P-40B Warhawk - designated the Tomahawk Mk.IIA by the RAF - was an early version of the American P-40 fighter aircraft and entered service in 1941. Based on the P-36 Hawk, it was powered by a liquid-cooled Allison V-1710 V-12 engine producing approximately 1,040 hp.

The P-40B featured a robust all-metal construction and retractable landing gear, with the main gear retracting rearward into the wings. With a top speed of approximately 570 km/h, it was a capable aircraft for its time, though it could not always keep pace with more modern adversaries in terms of maneuverability or high-altitude performance.

The P-40B was armed with two 12.7 mm machine guns in the upper engine cowling and two 7.62 mm machine guns in the wings. Additionally, a bomb could be carried under the fuselage.

The P-40B became particularly famous for its service with the American Volunteer Group (AVG) in China - the "Flying Tigers." The distinctive shark-mouth nose art on these aircraft remains one of the most iconic images of World War II aviation. The P-40B was also operated by the US Army Air Forces and various Allied air forces. Aircraft of this type, designated Tomahawk Mk.IIA, also reached the Royal Air Force and allied air forces through British deliveries. They were primarily used for fighter, escort, and low-level missions.
