Seaplane version of the Supermarine Spitfire, developed in 1942, based on the Mk VB airframe using floats developed by Supermarine (as the Supermarine Type 355).
Converted by Folland Aircraft with a four-blade propeller, Merlin 45 engines, tropical filter, and additional ventral fin.
First flight on October 12, 1942, later fitted with an additional dorsal fin and Aero-Vee tropical filter.
Two further Mk VB conversions by Folland in 1943; all three were flown to Egypt and the Great Bitter Lake in late 1943, but were not used operationally.
A Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk IXB with a Merlin 66 engine and four-blade propeller (Type 385), similarly converted by Folland, first flight on June 18, 1944, later converted back to a landplane.
