Alexander S. Yakovlev, a member of the second generation of Russian aircraft designers and primarily known for his fighter designs, always maintained a department for the design of light aircraft.
In May 1945, Yakovlev began designing the two-seat Yak-18 trainer aircraft.
He designed it to replace the earlier Yakovlev UT-2 and Yak-5 aircraft in service with the Soviet Air Force and DOSAAF (Voluntary Society for Cooperation with the Army, Air Force, and Navy, which sponsored flying clubs throughout the USSR). The new aircraft flew a year later, powered by a five-cylinder Shvetsov M-11 radial engine and featuring retractable tailwheel landing gear.
The Yak-18 became the standard trainer for Air Force and DOSAAF flight schools and is currently in extensive service in China and many other countries.
