By 1985, over 10,000 units of this delta-winged aircraft had been manufactured, with production continuing for foreign customers. Additionally, India and China produce their own versions of the aircraft for domestic use.
Its narrow wingspan limits the number of under-wing hardpoints, meaning the "Fishbed" can carry a relatively limited weapons load. However, as a fighter aircraft, this is not necessarily a disadvantage, given that it is equipped with at least one 23mm cannon and can carry up to four air-to-air missiles as well as an additional fuselage fuel tank.
Ironically, some Russian-built MiG-21s have been modified to carry American AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles—for instance, in Egypt, where the aircraft operate alongside more modern F-16 jets, and in India.
