It entered service at the end of 1944 and immediately proved to be extremely powerful, robust and reliable.
On the Pacific front, she recorded a high number of enemy aircraft shot down.
The Corsair also featured the most powerful radial engine available in American industry at the time. This was the 18-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp, which could achieve an output of over 2000 hp.
The powerful engine was an integral part of the aircraft design, which resulted in the characteristic and easily recognizable seagull wing.
Its reliability led to an exceptionally long service life and use in large numbers during the Korean War.
However, its primary role was no longer that of a fighter, as this role was now taken over by jet aircraft, but it became a day/night ground attack aircraft, providing close support to ground forces.
