Its standard armament included AIM-7 Sparrow guided missiles for medium-range air combat and AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles for close-range engagements. Since the F-4J initially lacked a built-in internal cannon, many aircraft were later equipped with an external SUU-23/A 20mm gun pod after combat experience in Vietnam demonstrated the importance of gun armament for close-range air combat. VF-114 "Aardvarks" participated in several combat missions between 1965 and 1973, escorting strike groups, flying air patrols, and achieving several confirmed kills of North Vietnamese MiG fighters. Distinctive features included the squadron's eye-catching markings—featuring a stylized aardvark—and yellow-and-black tail markings. The F-4J remained in service after the Vietnam War, with many aircraft being upgraded to the modernized F-4S variant. It was not until the 1980s that it was gradually replaced by the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. To this day, the VF-114 "Aardvarks" F-4J is regarded as one of the U.S. Navy's most famous and successful carrier-based Phantom variants.
