It formed the basis for the Mirage IIIC, IIIE, and III-5 aircraft families, which remain in service today.
It symbolized Israel's superiority in wars with its Arab neighbors. Israeli Mirage IIICs participated in the War of the Sea, the Six-Day War, the War of Attrition, and the Yom Kippur War, as well as many smaller conflicts. Numerous Israeli pilots became flying aces with the Mirage IIIC. The Mirage IIIC was also incorporated into the inventory of the Israeli Air Force (Armée de l'Air). Another export customer was South Africa. The SAAF received 15 aircraft of this version, followed later by more of the IIIE and IIIR versions.
Mirage IIICs were used in South Africa for a long time and in conflicts with neighboring countries. Not even the UN embargo could prevent this. Argentina also faced an embargo after losing the Falklands War.
The country therefore acquired nineteen Mirage IIIC aircraft from Israel in 1982/83 and operated them until 1990.
