Derived from the famous twin-engine McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II fighter, the RF-4C is a tactical reconnaissance aircraft specifically designed for observation and reconnaissance missions—including those conducted under difficult and complex conditions over hostile territory. Compared to the fighter variants, it was easily distinguished by the configuration of its nose section, which housed state-of-the-art (at the time) photographic and terrain-scanning systems. Heavily utilized during the Vietnam War, the aircraft underwent continuous upgrades to its avionics and data/image acquisition systems, remaining in service with the United States Air Force and the armed forces of allied nations until the late 1990s. Its flight performance was impressive, featuring a top speed exceeding Mach 2.
