During the International Geophysical Year (IGY) from 1957 to 1958, particularly in connection with Operation Deep Freeze, several Neptunes were equipped with skis and deployed by the Navy in Antarctica.
The IGY was a joint project of 40 nations to conduct geoscientific studies from the North Pole to the South Pole. The United States, New Zealand, Great Britain, France, Japan, Norway, Chile, Argentina, and the Soviet Union decided to travel to the South Pole, the least explored area on Earth. Their goal was to expand global knowledge of Antarctica's hydrography and weather systems, glacier movements, and marine life.
