The F9F-2 Panther was Grumman's first jet fighter and the U.S. Navy's first carrier-based jet fighter to serve in combat.
During the Korean War, it served as the core of carrier-based air forces attacking communist ground forces. It was also the first U.S. Navy aircraft to shoot down a jet fighter.

Variants included the F9F-2P, a photo-reconnaissance version, and the F9F-5 with a J48-P-4 engine.
