In the 1950s, the American company Northrop decided to develop a simple, inexpensive fighter aircraft to equip the air forces of several NATO countries.
The F-5, developed for this purpose, was a single-seat, light, small but extremely maneuverable fighter aircraft.
It was easy to manufacture, relatively inexpensive and was characterized by its high usability.
The first versions produced by Northrop, called the F-5A "Freedom Fighter", were able to reach a top speed of 1,700 km/h thanks to two General Electric J85-GE-13 engines.
Equipped with two 20 mm cannons in the nose of the fuselage, the F5 was a true "multi-purpose aircraft" as it could be used for both air defense and ground attacks.
The combination of these properties ensured its rapid spread and use by numerous air forces.
