The heavy transport aircraft Fairchild C-119 served the US Air Force as the basis for conversion into a “flying gunship”. This special design was used primarily in Vietnam for night operations against Viet Cong supply lines and troop concentrations.
The AC-119 K version was particularly effective against trucks due to its two 20 mm cannons and four 7.62 mm minicannons.
Another version, the AC-119 G, had lighter armament.
Two additional jet engines were fitted to enable the aircraft to take off from short runways fully loaded with ammunition.
With the entry into service of the more powerful AC-130H, these aircraft were gradually handed over to the South Vietnamese Air Force, which used them until the fall of the Saigon government.
