Continuing an existing agreement between Sikorski and Westland, the Wessex was originally developed for the Royal Navy for anti-submarine warfare and as a multi-role helicopter, but was further developed as the HC.2 for the Royal Air Force and entered service in 1962, one year later than the Navy's aircraft.
In RAF service, these powerful helicopters performed a variety of roles, including troop and supply transport, ground support, and air evacuation.
However, their use as a sea rescue helicopter made them one of the most distinguished aircraft of their time.
The Wessex represented the pinnacle of rotary-wing technology at its introduction, capable of operating from and to locations inaccessible to other aircraft.
