The HH-53C Jolly Green was developed by Sikorsky as a variant of the CH-53 Sea Stallion heavy helicopter. It entered service with the US Air Force in the late 1960s. It was designed for CSAR (Search and Rescue) missions in combat zones, requiring high operational effectiveness.
Compared to its predecessor, it featured an aerial refueling probe, additional fuel tanks, reinforced armor, and the capability to mount additional defensive armament. Particular attention was paid to improving the radio systems, which were essential for coordinating operational activities with other support aircraft—such as tanker aircraft or attack and support helicopters—to reliably locate downed or missing pilots. Robust, reliable and equipped with a long flight duration, it was frequently used in the Vietnam War.
