The Focke-Wulf FW190, which made its first flight in 1939, posed an immediate threat to RAF fighters upon its introduction in late 1941, as it was faster and more maneuverable than the Spitfire V then in service.

The F-8 was the ground-attack version and differed primarily in its lack of Outboard cannons. Various combinations of underwing weapons were mounted, but the most common were a fuselage bomb and four small bombs mounted on the wings.

The A-8 was the most widely used, heavily armed variant and entered service in 1944 to prevent Allied daylight raids. By then, however, the new Allied fighters had already outgunned it.
