Development began in 1941, and the first prototype flew in May 1942, reaching a speed of 628 km/h. The aircraft featured landing gear that retracted towards the wingtips; its armament consisted of two 20 mm cannons in the wings and two 12.7 mm machine guns mounted above the engine.
In February, the Italian government ordered a pre-production batch of 18 aircraft followed by a production run of 750 machines, though these were never built. The second prototype, which had been undergoing testing by the Luftwaffe since the spring of 1943, achieved a speed of 720 km/h. Deliveries of the Re.2005 began in May 1943, utilizing license-built Fiat RA.1050 RC-58 engines that delivered 1,475 hp. Following Italy's capitulation, the completed aircraft were seized by the Luftwaffe; some of the planes saw service with Berlin air defense units.
