The new single-seat biplane retained the fixed landing gear and open cockpit of its predecessor, but introduced several innovations, including an all-aluminum and steel construction with metal and fabric sheathing.
Its air-cooled radial engine, the Fiat A.74, gave the C.R. 42 a top speed of 400 km/h.
The aircraft was distinguished by its exceptional maneuverability, which was highly valued by pilots, but suffered from the inherent limitations of the biplane configuration, which hampered its operational performance compared to more modern and powerful monoplanes.
A special night fighter version was produced, with extended exhaust pipes to reduce enemy visibility during night operations.
