The North American P-51 Mustang is undoubtedly one of the most legendary aircraft in military aviation history and is considered the best piston-engine fighter of World War II. Developed in a remarkably short time, the P-51 was based on the Packard V-12 engine with over 1,600 hp, which enabled the Mustang to reach speeds of over 700 km/h (430 mph). The P-51D, the most widely produced variant, was armed with six 12.7 mm Browning machine guns mounted in the wings. It was widely used on the European front, primarily to escort bomber formations, but also as a ground-attack fighter-bomber. The Mustang was flown by some of the most famous American aces of World War II, who demonstrated its exceptional performance and operational capability.
