The Supermarine Spitfire is undoubtedly one of the most famous fighter aircraft in aviation history and an icon of British aircraft engineering. This single-engine, low-wing monoplane with effective offensive armament formed—along with the Hawker Hurricane—the backbone of the Royal Air Force's fighter squadrons during the Battle of Britain against the German Luftwaffe. To counter the enemy's technological advances, the Spitfire was continuously developed throughout the war, both in terms of its aerodynamic configuration and its engine options. Introduced in 1941, the Spitfire Mk V, powered by the 1,440 hp Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, was produced in large numbers and distributed to numerous operational squadrons. Flown by some of the Royal Air Force's most celebrated fighter aces, it achieved a significant number of aerial victories.
