Lavochkin La-5 „Valerij Ckalov“

The history of the La-5 aircraft begins even before the start of the war with the LaGG-1 and LaGG-3 designs. The LaGG-3 aircraft was experimentally equipped with the AŠ-82 radial engine in 1942. The prototype's flight tests yielded satisfactory results. Army test pilots rated the new La-5 as more powerful than its main competitor, the Yak-7.
In July 1942, mass production was ordered and all existing LaGG-3 airframes were ordered to be used to the new standard. Although the La-5 lost to the best German fighters at higher flight levels, at medium altitudes and close to the ground it was an equal opponent.
Most air battles on the Eastern Front took place at altitudes below 5,000 meters, and the Soviet Air Force acquired a very powerful weapon in the La-5. The machine was further improved, it received a fuel-injected engine, was lightened, and was equipped with fixed slots. The improved aircraft was designated La-5FN.
