The carrier-capable aircraft of this era still had straight wings, making them inferior to the feared swept-wing Soviet Mig-15, which was highly maneuverable and highly operational.
Production of the Fury began in 1952 with modifications required for takeoff and landing on aircraft carriers.
To maximize onboard space, the aircraft featured folding wings, a longer nose and reinforced landing gear.
Thanks to its General Electric J47 engine, the Fury demonstrated good flight performance and a top speed of 1086 km/h.
She was armed with 4 Colt Mk 12 guns installed in the nose.
The successor version, the North American FJ-3, was equipped with a new engine and offered even better operational performance.
