The Sukhoi Su-15 was developed in the 1960s as a replacement for the Su-11 interceptor and initially appeared as an enlarged version of the Su-9/Su-11 family.
Powered by two engines and featuring two side intakes that created space in the new, massive nose for a large radar, the Su-15 flew significantly faster than any Western aircraft known at the time.
Furthermore, electronics, engines, and armament were continually improved, allowing the Su-15 to remain a formidable high-speed interceptor well into the 1980s, guarding Soviet airspace for much of the Cold War.
Perhaps the most notable, yet infamous, incident involving this aircraft occurred in 1983, when a Su-15TM "Flagon-F" shot down a Korean Air Lines Boeing 747, mistaking it for a reconnaissance aircraft.
By the mid-1980s, approximately 700 Su-15s were still in service, but these were gradually phased out and replaced by the MiG-31 and Su-27 by around 1993.
