The Mikoyan-Gurevich Mig-27 swing-wing fighter-bomber (NATO designation Flogger D) was developed by the Soviet aviation industry from the airframe of the Mig-23 fighter for use in both ground attack and close support aircraft.
The aerodynamic layout was essentially that of the Mig-23 fighter, but with a different nose configuration.
To better suit the aircraft's new role, onboard avionics were upgraded with new electronic countermeasures systems and radars for detecting, acquiring and marking ground targets.
Offensive armament was expanded with the introduction of a new, more powerful 30mm 6-barreled cannon, a combat payload of up to 4000 kg, including new air-to-ground missiles.
