As a replacement for the SkylarkⅢ helicopter, Aerospatiale began planning the Dauphin between 1968 and 1969.
The prototype's test flight took place in June 1972.
The SA365N, whose maiden flight took place in March 1979, was a modified version of the SA365C.
It featured several modifications, such as an enlarged rear wing and changes to the nose, cabin door, and rotor blades.
Other changes from the SA360 Dauphin were made, including the use of two engines instead of a single one; the front landing gear was changed from a triangular to a forward triangle to reduce drag.
By January 1986, 362 SA365Ns had been imported to 34 countries.
The Chinese Harbin Aero-Industrial Corp. produced fifty SA365N/N1 Dauphins under license, which were used for both military and civilian purposes.
In 1994, parts manufactured in China were incorporated into the production of an additional 30 Dauphins, including new engines.
