The AH-64D Apache Longbow Block II was introduced from 2003 in the Block II configuration and represented a significant development of the original AH-64D. It received modernized avionics, digital communications systems, an improved navigation system and the distinctive AN/APG-78 Longbow radar above the rotor mast, which was able to quickly detect and prioritize targets even in poor visibility. The Block II was armed with the 30 mm M230 chain cannon, AGM-114 Hellfire guided missiles and 70 mm rockets. The late production series featured numerous detailed improvements in electronics, software and communications and formed the technical basis for the later AH-64E. Externally, the late AH-64D Block II and early AH-64E only differ in a few details, but technically the Guardian has a significantly more powerful propulsion system, more modern mission systems and the ability to control unmanned aircraft.
