The Japanese battleships Yamato and Musashi also carried several F1M2s on board. The aircraft were launched via catapult and served to provide early reconnaissance of enemy naval formations, spot and adjust fire for the 460mm main guns, and conduct anti-submarine searches and close-range reconnaissance. Thanks to its maneuverability, ruggedness, and versatility, the F1M2 remained in service throughout the Pacific War and remains one of the best-known shipboard aircraft of the Japanese Navy to this day.
