The Mitsubishi F1M2 Type Zero Observation Seaplane Model 11 - known to the Allies as "Pete" - was the Imperial Japanese Navy's standard observation seaplane, entering service in 1941. This two-seat biplane, featuring a single central float, was specifically designed for catapult launch from battleships and cruisers. Its primary roles included maritime reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and fire control for heavy naval guns. Powered by an air-cooled Mitsubishi Zuisei 13 radial engine producing approximately 875 hp, the F1M2 achieved a top speed of around 370 km/h. Its armament consisted of two fixed 7.7 mm machine guns and a flexible machine gun for the observer, along with the capability to carry light bombs.

The Japanese battleships Yamato and Musashi also carried several F1M2s on board. The aircraft were launched via catapult and served to provide early reconnaissance of enemy naval formations, spot and adjust fire for the 460mm main guns, and conduct anti-submarine searches and close-range reconnaissance. Thanks to its maneuverability, ruggedness, and versatility, the F1M2 remained in service throughout the Pacific War and remains one of the best-known shipboard aircraft of the Japanese Navy to this day.
