In early 1945, with the Japanese military situation in dire straits, the Japanese Army Command asked Nakajima to design a special aircraft capable of carrying a single bomb weighing approximately 800 kg. However, the primary focus was on a simple aircraft design and inexpensive, widely available materials. Designer Aori Kunihiro designed such an aircraft, and in less than two months, the Tsurugi was ready for its first flight. Tests revealed several drawbacks (including poor visibility from the cockpit and landing gear problems). The latter drawback was not particularly significant, as the Ki-115 was actually intended for kamikaze pilots. After correcting some defects and implementing some improvements, the Tsurugi was put into mass production. Production aircraft were powered by a Nakajima Ha-115 radial engine and two additional rocket engines under the wings. The rocket engines were designed to assist takeoff, although other sources also state that the speed was increased in the final phase of the attack. The production aircraft were designated the "Nakajima Ki-115a Tsurugi." Despite the rapid work pace and rapid production, the Japanese never used any of the combat-built Tsurugis. A total of just over 100 aircraft of this type were produced, and work continued until the last moment on an improved version, designated the Ki-115b, as well as a variant for naval aviation. The "Tsurugi" was a single-engine, single-seat, tracked, low-wing monoplane of mixed construction. The aircraft carried no small arms, only an 800 kg bomb mounted on the fuselage. After Japan's surrender, one Ki-115a was captured by US troops and transported to the USA. Technical specifications: Length: 8.55 m, wingspan: 8.6 m, height: 3.3 m, maximum speed: 550 km/h, maximum range: 1200 km, armament: fixed – the Ki-115 had no fixed armament, suspended – up to 800 kg explosive charge.
