Historical Significance
The North American B-25 Mitchell is an American twin-engine medium bomber that entered service in 1941 and became one of the most widely used bombers of World War II. The aircraft was named after General William "Billy" Mitchell, a pioneer of American military aviation. The aircraft gained particular fame through the Doolittle Raid in April 1942, during which sixteen B-25Bs launched from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet to attack Tokyo—marking the first American strike on Japanese territory.
The B-25J was the most widely produced variant, with over 4,300 units built. It combined the bomber's classic glazed nose with heavy machine-gun armament (up to eighteen .50-caliber machine guns in ground-attack configurations). This made it a versatile aircraft capable of performing both conventional medium-altitude bombing missions and low-level attacks against land and sea targets. The B-25J operated primarily in the Pacific and Mediterranean theaters but was also used by numerous other Allied forces, including the RAF, the Soviet Air Force (VVS), and Dutch units. The aircraft remained in service for decades after the war—serving as trainers, liaison aircraft, and transports—and remain among the most popular historic military aircraft ("warbirds") at airshows to this day.
