The Supermarine Spitfire is considered one of the most famous fighter aircraft in aviation history and an 'icon' of British aviation production.
The well-armed single-engine low-wing aircraft, along with the Hawker Hurricane, formed the backbone of the Royal Air Force combat units deployed against the German Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain. The Spitfire's success helped cement its status as a legendary aircraft. It was celebrated for its elliptical wing design and powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine.

The Spitfire was also used intensively after the war - for example in French Indochina (Vietnam) or by the Israeli Air Force.
