Lockheed Hudson Mk.III - RAF Reconnaissance Bomber

In April 1938, a British procurement commission arrived in the USA to seek maritime reconnaissance aircraft for the RAF. In response, Lockheed offered a modified version of the "Model 14 Super Electra" airliner; legendary designer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson revised the design overnight, adding—among other features—a glazed nose section for the navigator and bombardier.
A contract for 200 aircraft was signed in late June 1938, making the aircraft—now designated the Lockheed Hudson—the first American plane to enter service with the RAF during World War II.
Although based on a civilian design, the Hudson became an indispensable wartime workhorse. It performed a wide range of duties—including anti-submarine patrols, convoy escort, bombing missions, and covert operations to drop resistance fighters into occupied Europe—before being used for transport and training roles later in the war.
Variants included the Hudson Mk III, introduced in 1940; it was powered by two 1,200 hp Wright Cyclone radial engines and featured a retractable ventral gun turret to defend the lower rear fuselage.
