The I-16 Type 5 was the second production version of this aircraft.
With a new cowling and a more powerful M-25 engine, it reached speeds of up to 450 km/h.
During its production run, the aircraft received new, reinforced wings, larger wheels, and an open cockpit. Fighters of this type saw action from 1936 to 1939 in the Spanish Civil War, in conflicts with Japan and Finland, and in the early stages of World War II.
