In practice, the AH-6J and MH-6J usually operate as a team. While the MH-6J inserts or extracts special forces with pinpoint accuracy at the mission site, the AH-6J provides aerial cover and engages threats in the immediate vicinity. This synergy makes the Little Bird family one of the Night Stalkers' most successful aircraft systems and contributes significantly to the reputation they earned during operations in Panama, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
The "Night Stalkers" are members of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) (160th SOAR), a special operations unit of the U.S. Army. Their primary mission is to transport and provide aerial support to special operations forces such as Delta Force, the United States Navy SEALs, and the United States Army Rangers.
The unit was formed after the failed hostage rescue attempt during Operation Eagle Claw. This incident highlighted the U.S. military's need for a specially trained helicopter unit for covert and highly demanding missions. Since its inception, the Night Stalkers have participated in numerous operations in Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other crisis zones.
Their motto is "Night Stalkers Don't Quit." The unit's soldiers are specialized in operating at night, in difficult terrain, and under extreme weather conditions. Among their best-known aircraft are the MH-60 Black Hawk, MH-47 Chinook, and the AH-6 and MH-6 Little Bird helicopters.
The AH-6J Little Bird “Nightstalker” earned its nickname because it was used by this highly specialized unit and is closely associated with its operations.
