The Bell AH-1, developed from the Bell UH-1B, became the world's first helicopter designed as a dedicated attack helicopter.
Although the US Army replaced this helicopter type with the AH-64 "Apache" decades ago, the United States Marine Corps continues to use the aircraft, continually adapting them to meet current needs.
The Bell AH-1Z "Viper" is a twin-engine attack helicopter based on the AH-1W "Super Cobra" and developed as part of the H-1 upgrade program. Compared to the AH-1W "Whiskey," the AH-1Z "Zulu" features a four-blade main rotor system, an improved transmission, and new sighting optics.
The helicopter has been in service with the United States Marine Corps since 2010.
In December 2019, the Czech Republic finalized the purchase of four AH-1Zs for the Czech Air Force from the United States.
In March 2022, the Czech Republic announced the purchase of additional helicopters, attributing this decision to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
