It needed to be easy to manufacture and fly.
In the astonishingly short span of three months from the drawing board to the prototype's first flight, Heinkel produced the small, sporty-looking He 162.
The light fighter was constructed primarily of wood and powered by a BMW 003 turbojet engine, which, with a top speed of 838 km/h, made it the fastest jet fighter of World War II.
When it reached combat units at the end of March 1945, it achieved some successes despite the acute shortages of fuel and parts.
