The Wolf Greenliner 2020 represents the latest generation of the Bundeswehr’s unprotected off-road vehicles. Based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the vehicle was introduced to meet the troops' growing need for modern, all-terrain command and transport vehicles.
The designation "Greenliner" stems from the green vehicle fleet procured by BundeswehrFuhrparkService GmbH since 2006. While the initial Greenliner vehicles were already based on the G-Class starting in 2008, the "Greenliner 2020" version emerged as a comprehensively modernized variant designed to meet the requirements of the 2020s. The procurement project began in 2019, with the first vehicles delivered to the Bundeswehr starting in 2020. Initially, more than 700 vehicles were planned. The introduction was driven in particular by the need to support NATO commitments and modernize the Wolf vehicle family.
Technically, the Greenliner 2020 is based on the Mercedes-Benz G 300 CDI. It is powered by a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder diesel engine producing 135 kW (184 hp). Its equipment includes permanent all-wheel drive, an automatic transmission, locking differentials, air conditioning, an auxiliary heater, and other components for operation in various climatic zones. The G-Class's exceptional off-road capability has been fully retained.
Compared to civilian models, the Greenliner features numerous military-specific modifications. These include blackout lighting, mounts for weapons and equipment, anti-glare devices, jump-start terminals, and various radio communication systems. The four-seat cabin offers ample space for soldiers and their personal gear. Thanks to a combination of high mobility, robust technology, and relatively simple maintenance, the vehicle is suitable for training operations as well as exercises and deployments. Particularly striking is the camouflage paintwork, which gives the vehicle its distinctive appearance and has earned it the unofficial nickname "Fleckliner." This sets the Greenliner 2020 clearly apart—visually—from earlier vehicles in the Bundeswehr fleet.
