From 1981 to 1985, work was carried out on an improved armored engineer vehicle based on the Leopard 1. The result was the creation of the 2 A1 "Dachs" (German: Pionierpanzer 2 A1 "Dachs") from 36 armored engineer vehicles and 104 spare armored recovery vehicles (Bergepanzer 2) starting in 1989.
This vehicle was given a crane boom with a backhoe instead of the crane boom.
This gave it an excavation capacity of approximately 140 m³ per hour.
With deep-wading equipment, underwater work is possible up to a depth of 4 m.
The telescopic boom enables work at distances of up to 9.2 m.
With a hook on the arm, various loads can be lifted, from 2.6 t at a 7.92 m radius to 7.8 t at a 3.98 m radius.
The dozer blade can be expanded to a width of 3.75 m with two extensions. The clearing capacity with the blade is 270 m³ per hour.
The cable winch has been modified and can now also be used underwater.
The Dachs also carries various engineering equipment on board, such as a welding and cutting system, etc.
